FAQ

Everything you need to know to get ready for your first class!

If your question isn’t here, find even more studio info on our Policies page or drop us a line and we’ll be happy to help!

HOW DO WE SIGN UP?

Pre-registration is required for all of our youth programs. Once you click the enrollment links on the webpage of the program you want to join, you’ll be routed to our Mindbody platform. If you’ve never used Mindbody before, you’ll be prompted to create a username and password. From there, you can complete registration, sign our liability waiver and add “relationships” to connect your child’s name to your account. You can login to Mindbody at any time to view your upcoming schedule, add classes, update billing info and so forth.

MY CHILD HAS NEVER DANCED BEFORE, WHAT CLASS SHOULD THEY TRY FIRST?

ZAZZ is a judgment-free space. We welcome students of all abilities (as well as all races, genders, sexual orientations, nationalities and so on…) Many of our classes are beginner friendly, though we also offer leveled technique classes for older kids. For brand new dancers, look for class descriptions that denote “intro” or “beginner level.” Drama offerings are generally open to all experience levels, unless indicated otherwise.

If you’re still unsure which class or genre to try first, just give us a call! We can make some recommendations after hearing about your child’s background and interests.

CAN I WATCH A CLASS?

We generally do not allow observers during classes because it can be distracting or uncomfortable for the students. (Exception: Parents sometimes sit in for the 2-3 year old classes if their child needs a little extra familiarity, but this generally wanes over the course of a session.)

That said, if you’d like to get an in-person look at our programs, we welcome you to set up a tour on any school day between 5-6 pm. One of our afterschool instructors can show you around the space and answer any questions. Depending on timing, you could also peek in on one of the 5 pm “express” dance or improv classes, which are generally more informal. Simply contact us to set up a date.

WHERE IS YOUR STUDIO AND WHAT’S PARKING LIKE?

We’re located at 1923 Chestnut St, 2nd Floor, in the heart of Center City. Find detailed directions, parking tips and more here. We definitely recommend taking public transportation, biking or walking to class if you can — aside from being more environmentally friendly, it’ll save you the headache of finding parking!

If you need to drive, there are metered street spots and a couple of 20-minute loading zones nearby. There are also several surface lots and parking garages, which range from $10-30 depending on how long you park.

WHAT SHOULD THE STUDENTS WEAR?

Anything comfortable for movement. Ballet and jazz shoes come in handy for those  classes, but socks will also be just fine, especially for those just starting out. Tap is one class where having actual tap shoes makes it exponentially more fun. But if you want to test out the style before investing in shoes, sneakers will also do the trick.

For Afterschool: School attire is fine for most classes. For dance fitness classes, the goal is to get sweaty, so you may want to send an extra t-shirt. For students taking ballet, we recommend bringing tights or leggings and a tank top or leotard.

For Summer Camp: On extra hot days, we recommend sending an extra t-shirt and shorts in case we get sweaty doing dance fitness or running around outside. On sprinkler park Wednesdays, send your child in with a bathing suit under their clothes, an extra change of clothing, sunscreen and a towel.

In snowy or rainy weather: We really appreciate it if you put an extra pair of clean, dry shoes and socks in your child’s bag. This helps us keep dirt, salt and snow off the floor, which not only prevents slips/injuries, but also extends the life of our dance floors.

CAN STUDENTS CHANGE AT THE STUDIO?

Of course! Our locker area has four individual changing rooms with attached showers. We also have plenty of hooks and racks for coats/sweatshirts, etc. Other belongings can be stored in cubbies in the front room.

DO STUDENTS NEED TO BRING ANYTHING?

Just water and, if applicable, dance shoes.

WHAT TIME SHOULD STUDENTS ARRIVE?

Best to arrive 5-10 minutes before class start time.

ARE THERE MAKE-UP CLASSES IF MY CHILD HAS TO MISS A DAY?

Yes! If you need to miss a day for a doctor appointment, illness or other extenuating circumstance, you can come in on another day that week. Just be sure to notify us in advance so we’re clear on exactly which kids are getting picked up from school each day. Make-up days cannot be accumulated from week to week.

When schools close for professional development you can sign up for “School’s Out” camps or drop your child off for their normally scheduled program in the afternoon. If you choose to keep them home you cannot make up this day. Holidays where we are closed are not eligible for make-ups, either.

CAN I GET A REFUND IF MY CHILD MISSES CLASS?

We do not offer refunds for missing class.

DO YOU CLOSE FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER?

Very rarely! Rain doesn’t stop us, and we’ve been known to have snow day dance parties. During snowstorms, we may reduce the schedules based on which instructors can safely make it to the studios. If we have cancelations – weather related or due to any other emergency – we always post them on our social media channels and directly notify clients signed up for affected classes via email or text.

I DON’T SEE A CERTAIN CLASS, DO YOU STILL OFFER IT?

Sometimes our schedule changes due to instructor availability or student demand. If there’s a class you’d really like to take, contact us to discuss adding it to the schedule. We also offer private lessons, which can be scheduled at your convenience.
